New Brewery by Loch Ness

Siblings brewing up taste of Loch
Inverness Courier , Published:  18 January, 2011

TWO brothers are the latest to tap into the Highlands’ thriving specialist beer market by launching a new brewery business from their pub in Drumnadrochit.

Hoteliers and real ale enthusiasts Allan and Stephen Crossland are to create the Loch Ness Brewery more than 150 years since beer was last produced locally.

The move comes a week after The Inverness Courier revealed that the established Black Isle Brewery in Munlochy has secured its first export order, supplying its Goldeneye Pale Ale to Sweden’s state controlled off licences.

Five different beers will be produced by the Crosslands, who have run the village’s Benleva Hotel for nine years. They already host an annual beer festival and sell products from other Highland breweries. Having carried out extensive tasting, research and sought advice from other independent brewers, the brothers hope to start serving up their own beers for real in March.

Patrons in the hotel’s bar on Kilmore Road will have the chance to try out the range – including Hoppy Ness – because the brothers intend to only supply their own premises at first.

Allan Crossland (41) said the venture had been in the pipeline for some time but the economic circumstances had made it difficult to secure investment from banks.

“It was something we always wanted to do,” he explained. “There used to be a small brewery at the Lewiston Arms Hotel 150 years ago.”

Thirty-nine-year-old Stephen said the aim was to start small and slowly expand production and hoped the venture would create new jobs in the future.

“We set up the Loch Ness Brewing Company a few years ago and it has been a continued process getting all the bits and bobs together. We are going to brew the beer from a cottage behind the hotel.”

Despite a world renowned legend on their doorstep, the brothers have made a conscious decision not to use Nessie in any of their packaging and marketing, preferring to identify the ales with the loch.

“There are enough things trading on Nessie already,” said Mr Crossland who refused to say how much they had invested in the project other than it was a considerable sum of money.

Test brews are currently being undertaken and equipment installed. Mr Crossland said advice from Angus MacRuary, one of the founders of the award winning Isle of Skye Brewery, had been invaluable.

North bars join forces in new quality scheme

Four favourite drinking places in trade sign-up

Four Inverness-shire venues are among the first to join a new quality scheme designed to highlight and promote good bars, pubs and inns across Scotland.

The Best Bars scheme is part of a new partnership, which is placing Scotland’s pubs and bars at the heart of the tourism industry.

VisitScotland and the Scottish Licensed Trade Association (SLTA) have joined forces to drive up standards and encourage even more visitors to enjoy Scotland’s establishments.

The Benleva Hotel, Drumnadrochit, and the Heathmount Hotel in Inverness are among the first members.

Other city businesses which have received the “Best Bars” accolade are Johnny Foxes and Clachnaharry Inn.

The scheme, which has been developed in partnership with the industry including several SLTA members, sees bars being assessed through an incognito visit by one of VisitScotland’s quality advisors. The assessment looks at factors from ambience and service to how the business encourages responsible drinking

Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead said: “Scotland’s licensed trade plays a crucial part of our tourism offering. Tourism brings a revenue of £4billion and supports 200,000 jobs. One pound in every £5 spent by a visitor in Scotland is on food and drink-related activities, therefore, it makes sense that the two industries work closely together.”

Scott Armstrong, VisitScotland’s regional director for the Highlands, said: “Pubs and bars are very important for visitors and it is fantastic to see these local businesses among the first to be recognised by the Best Bars scheme. Locally sourced food, knowledgeable staff and a focus on providing a friendly and welcoming atmosphere all make a difference to a visitor’s experience.

“Already one-fifth of the amount that visitors spend in Scotland is on food and drink and there is real potential for us to increase that.

“Our partnership with SLTA is a major step towards driving up standards even further and encouraging more visitors to enjoy our highest-quality pubs and bars.”

Online Backup offer to Destination Loch Ness members

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

To many of you small businesses, the word backup is a word that describes what other “bigger businesses” do! “Doesn’t matter for small fry like me” I hear you say! But believe me, they/you really do need to backup your files regularly, because sooner or later you are going to have a computer crash – I know from bitter experience.

When it does happen, depending on whether you have a backup or not, it will be either a formality to get your data, pictures, invoices and word documents restored to your shiny new PC, or it will be a nightmare. Don’t get caught out.

For me personally, the worst part of backing up is actually remembering to do it, or finding the time to do it and, not least, knowing how to do it and what to backup. You can’t really rely on just remembering to do a backup now and again – you need a way to do it regularly as you work without having to actually remember to do it! You shouldn’t just make copies of important files and put in a folder on your D drive either, because if your hard drive fails you lose everything on that too.

Some of you, I expect, have an external drive which you simply plug into your P.C. especially for keeping your valuable files backed up. These external drives are relatively cheap and excellent for extending the storage capacity of your computer and especially useful if you take lots of pictures which can quickly fill up your hard drive. But a word of warning – if you do use external drives to copy your important files onto, you shouldn’t keep them anywhere near your PC. Not even in the same building, because if a fire ever broke out, and they frequently do near computers, you not only lose your PC but you lose your external drive as well.

So what do you do?

You could buy a good reliable backup program, use it to schedule regular backups, by that I mean daily backups. Remember to take your external drive out into the garden shed every night as a precaution against fire. Seriously, I have done that!!

OR….

You could save a lot of time and trouble and register with DLN for an online backup package. Unlimited online backup is now available to DLN members at a massively reduced price!

What is online backup? & how does it work?

Well, basically, it is a place where you can store your important files, documents and pictures securely online so that if your computer dies for any reason, your important files will not die along with it. Then when you get your new computer it is a simple matter of logging into your online storage area to retrieve your stuff – simple.

What I like about this online backup is that once you sign up and have your storage space allocated, you select on your PC all the stuff that you want to keep safe, click “go” and it does literally send copies of everything to your online backup. You don’t have to wait, it works in the background – you carry on work and the program does the rest. Here’s another clever bit – if you change a document on your PC – for example you add a chapter to your latest novel! the system automatically sends a copy of the changed document in your secure online storage space so you never again have to worry about it.

Now here is a really amazing offer to DLN members from Tourism Site Fix you can get as much online storage space as you want for a mere £12 per YEAR! that is less than a third of the normal price! and it’s so simple to set up, even I only took 2 minutes to get started. To sign up just drop me an email andy@visitlochness.com I will set up an account for you and if you are not absolutely delighted with it I will give you your money back!
