A week of weird and wonderful sightings across the country culminated last night (Wednesday June 25th) in a magical appearance by the fabled Loch Ness Monster, known by some as the Water Horse.

Using the latest water screen technology, a crew of experts recreated a scene from the magical family film The Water Horse: Legend Of The Deep to provide Loch Ness Monster fans with an incredible, indelible visual confirmation of a much-loved legend.

The event was captured to celebrate the DVD and Blu-ray release of The Water Horse: Legend Of The Deep on 30th June 2008. . Details of how to download video footage of this incredible event are below.

Professor Terry Stevens of Destination Loch Ness, the destination management organisation for the area has been very supportive of the creative activity, saying:

“It is hoped that global awareness of Loch Ness generated by The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep will help support the community in their bid to achieve World Heritage status, based on its outstanding natural scenery and extraordinary cultural history and of course the infamy of the Monster.”

It’s one of those things - the world has taken Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster to their heart

‘Her’ latest incarnation is in New York where Artist Joshua Allen Harris pieced together some garbage bags and taped them to a New York City subway grate. Now every time an underground train zooms by, the Loch Ness monster attacks.

Following the Oscars & away from the glamour of Tinseltown a new wave of homegrown talent is emerging to put Scotland on the film-making map. I caught this news item in the P&J about Highland Film-makers and decided to unashamedly plug some local talent.

“…At the other end of the scale, a new band of DIY film-makers are proving it is possible to reach an audience of millions with little more than a digital camera, a YouTube link-up and a good idea….
Adulation greeted teenager Drew Cameron, from Drumnadrochit, when he and four former school friends posted a series of surreal adventures featuring an empty milk carton on YouTube.
The youngsters became cult figures, getting stopped on the street by fans and winning admirers around the world.
Mr Cameron said it had been relatively easy to make the leap from aspiring filmmakers to internet sensations.”

Coming to the Sci Fi Channel in the USA on Saturday January 5th 2008, this film is the antithesis of the recent release of the family film The Water Horse.

No cuddly Kelpies here! Previously called ‘Loch Ness Terror’ (scroll down to a previous post to see an ace cheesy trailer ) ‘Beyond Loch Ness’ is American TV’s 2008 contribution to the B-movie horror fare for lake monsters.

The ‘Plot’ : As far as we can tell - Nessie has relocated to Canada, possibly after an internet romance, has shacked up with Champ and has bred lots of little monsters. This happy family unit then appears to try and eat everyone in sight - which they kind of deserve as the main character is out to kill them after his dad was allegedly munched by Nessie 20 years earlier. Probably in retribution for really bad acting.

Screenings in Scotland may have to wait until after we can sort out Nessie’s repatriation and give her counselling to work through the trauma of being involved in such scurrilous activities . It is yet unclear if Champ & the kids will be moving back with her.

The Earthrace is rapidly becoming the highest-profile powerboat in the world, as well as one of the greenest. The launch of a 65m long model of the Loch Ness Monster, constructed from 60,000 balloons, over 2 days by young people and volunteers from across the Highlands, along with Dutch balloon artist Guido Verhoef and his team. Launched onto Loch Ness from near Bonar Lighthouse…due to strong winds the monster didn’t last long, but the experience inspired everyone involved.(and all the balloons were biodegradable)!
