Beer, it used to be a poor man’s drink but not anymore, though it is certainly not an expensive drink it has become a drink for beer enthusiasts rather like one would be an expert on fine wine now there are lots of folk, male and female who appreciate a good glass of the old dark brew! and are prepared to travel far and wide in search of new brands of REAL ALE. Beer festivals are popping up everywhere including Loch Ness and there’s even a group called CAMRA (Campaign for real ale) who have done much to promote real ale and encourage traditional brewing methods.
Loch Ness has joined the list of must visit destinations for serious beer drinkers, we have a new brewery at Loch Ness called of course the Loch Ness Brewery. Based in Drumnadrochit it has been brewed for the Benleva pub but will be available for sale in other local establishments, this is great news for the Loch ness beer scene as for years it has been very hard to find good beer around Loch Ness, then a few years ago the Black Isle Brewerysprang up with an excellent range of beers which have become very popular locally.
We have some great beers around the loch now and some good pubs in Inverness but few around the loch, the Benleva has now become a must try pub in the heart of Drumnadrochit Loch Ness’s Monster centre thanks to the new Brewery.
Now I am off to get a pint of HoppyNess Golden Ale!

Why Beer Drinkers are Getting Excited about Loch Ness
Tuesday, January 8th, 2013Loch Ness Gets the Nuts!
Friday, October 26th, 2012Destination Loch Ness has been given £25,000 from the Natural Growth Fund to promote wildlife, the scenery and outdoor activities to encourage visitors to extend their visit to the Loch Ness area .
In a statement supporting its funding application, Destination Loch Ness said: “Loch Ness has always been known for one thing, ‘Nessie – the The Loch Ness Monster’, and while this has been very important to the awareness of the area, visitors are sometimes not aware of what other natural wonders and wildlife we have here”.
“This project, by profiling the natural landscape around the loch and all the activities to be enjoyed, plus events, will make visitors realise Loch Ness really does have a lot to offer, thereby encouraging more visits and longer stays .”

The money, which must be match-funded by the applicants, will also be used to highlight lesser-known activities showcasing nature in the area, including “weaselling”, which is like potholing but done among rocks.
The £150,000 Growth Fund from the Year of Natural Scotland, launching next year, is aimed at supporting marketing projects showcasing Scotland’s unique natural environment and supporting the growth of tourism across the county.
It was opened to applications last month and provides awards on a 50:50 match-funding basis from £2,500 to £25,000.
Statistics suggest 40 per cent of tourism spending in Scotland is on nature-based activities; the value of wildlife tourism is estimated at over £270 million.
VisitScotland chairman Mike Cantlay said: “Not only is Loch Ness renowned around the world and a key Scottish icon, it is also very important area of outstanding environmental and cultural heritage. This award will help position Loch Ness more strongly as a year-round natural destination in key UK markets.”
Morag’s Lodge Wins Prestigious Award
Friday, June 1st, 2012Morag’s Lodge on Loch Ness Wins Hospitality Assured ‘Team of the Year’
Visit Loch Ness member Morag’s Lodge has just won ‘Team of the Year’ – a business excellence award given by Hospitality Assured, the quality standard created by the Institute of Hospitality.
The backpacker lodge, which is owned by Haggis Adventures is used in their tour itinerary for trips such as the five day ‘Highland Fling” is operated by a dedicated team of local Highlanders. The team were praised for being ‘extremely active in the local community’, ‘epitomising Highland Hospitality’
Pete Duncan, General Manager for Business Operations UK & Ireland said: “We are extremely delighted to win ‘Team of the Year’ and it’s testament to the hard work that manager Claire Christie and her team puts in. Successful teamwork, sharing of ideas, innovation and listening to our customer’s feedback have all helped us achieve this; and to create a wonderful atmosphere and experience for anyone staying with us at Morag’s Lodge.”
One example of the team’s innovation was their response to customer feedback about the evening meal menu. When asked what they would like to see on the menu many customers responded ‘Scottish’, ‘local’ and ‘seasonal’ – and as a result the team decided you can’t get much more local than their garden.
Inspired to grow more they teamed up with community gardeners who use volunteers from deprived areas of Glasgow who came to Morag’s Lodge for a long weekend in March.
A series of workshops ensured the Morag’s Lodge team got the training and knowledge, which now helps them grow fresh, organic produce for their kitchen. Now 98% of our customer surveys say they would consider recommending us to their family and friends – we can’t ask for much better than this from our team.”
Background
HAGGiS Adventures pioneered the budget backpacker experience in 1993 and opened Morag’s Lodge in Fort Augustus at the southern end of Loch Ness in 1999 following a review of budget accommodation available at the time. It followed the same principles as used for their tour business; ‘budget’ and ‘quality’ can co-exist.
