The Highland Council Archive Service based in Inverness, holds the records for the former counties of Sutherland, Ross and Cromarty, Inverness-shire and Nairnshire dating from 1890 and the eleven burghs within those counties, the earliest of which dates from 1455.

Archives available include:

Local authority archives   School & education records  Poor relief records 
Valuation rolls Estate & family archives Business & solicitors records
Records od Societies & Associations Maps and plans including full set of 2nd edition Ordnance Sheets c.1899-1905 Sasine registers
Will registers Harbour & Turnpike Trusts Shipping registers

The Search Room is open to all members of the public free of charge. Staff are always on hand to advise. An appointment is essential.

Postal, telephone and e-mail enquiries: Initial enquiries can usually be dealt with free of charge however, if more substantial research is required, charges may apply.

An integral part of The Highland Council Archive Service is an area dedicated to Family History Research. Here, extensive collections of material which can be of assistance to anyone carrying out family history research are available. Sources available include:

Old Parish Registers on microfilm for the counties of

The Highland Council Genealogy staff are available for help and advice in researching your family tree. All research undertaken by yourself, without supervised guidance is free. Advice and guidance on genealogical sources is freely given during your visit, for a limited period of up to 10 minutes.
